What is the Hash Generator?

The Hash Generator is an online developer tool that converts a text, password, file content or any other data input into a fixed-length digest value. This value is called a hash, digest or message digest.

Hash algorithms are one of the fundamental cryptographic building blocks used in data integrity checks, file comparison, cache key generation, unique identifier creation and password storage systems. When the same data is processed with the same algorithm, the same hash result is obtained.

Hashing is not encryption. It is not intended to reliably return from the hash value to the original text. Therefore, sensitive passwords should not be stored with plain SHA or MD5 alone; salts and slow key derivation algorithms should be used instead.

How to use the Hash Generator?

Follow the steps below to generate a hash value from your text.

1

Add the text

Type or paste the text you want to hash into the input field.

2

Select the algorithm

Choose one of the options MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512.

3

Generate the hash

Click the Generate Hash button to view the hexadecimal result.

4

Use the result

Copy the hash value or download it as a text file.

Hash creation example

Aşağıdaki örnekte Tekno Danışman metni SHA-256 algoritmasıyla işlenir. Metindeki tek bir karakterin değişmesi bile tamamen farklı bir hash sonucu üretir.

Input

Tekno Danışman

SHA-256 output

Calculated in the browser when the Generate Hash button is clicked.
Algorithm Comparison

Differences between MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-2

The algorithms differ in output length, intended use and security level.

Algorithm Output length Security status Recommended use
MD5 128 bits / 32 hex characters Weak for cryptographic use Simple non-cryptographic integrity checks
SHA-1 160 bits / 40 hex characters Not recommended for cryptographic use Compatibility with legacy systems
SHA-256 256 bits / 64 hex characters Modern and widely used Data integrity, signatures and general-purpose hashing
SHA-384 384 bits / 96 hex characters High security Systems that require a longer digest
SHA-512 512 bits / 128 hex characters High security Strong data integrity and cryptographic operations
Important: The MD5 and SHA-1 algorithms are not considered secure against collision attacks. SHA-256 or stronger algorithms should be preferred in new cryptographic applications.
Use Cases

Where are hash values used?

Hash functions are used for many different purposes in software development, security and data integrity processes.

01

File integrity

Used to check whether a downloaded or transferred file has been altered.

02

Digital signatures

Hash functions are used to produce a fixed-length digest of the data to be signed.

03

Cache keys

Consistent and short cache keys can be generated from large or complex inputs.

04

Data comparison

Helps check whether two pieces of data are identical without comparing their entire content.

05

Unique identifiers

Can be used to create content-based keys and change-detection values.

06

Password systems

Passwords should not be hashed directly; a salt and methods such as Argon2, scrypt or PBKDF2 should be used.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Hash Generator

Read the answers to frequently asked questions about hash creation, MD5, SHA algorithms and data security.

What is the Hash Generator used for?
The Hash Generator processes the entered text with the selected algorithm and produces a fixed-length hexadecimal digest.
Is a hash value encrypted data?
No. Hashing is not encryption. Encryption can be reversed, whereas hash functions are designed to produce one-way digests.
Does the same text always produce the same hash value?
Yes. When the same text is processed with the same character encoding and the same algorithm, the same hash value is produced.
Does a small change in the text affect the hash result?
Yes. Changing a single character, a space or the letter case can produce a completely different hash result.
Is MD5 secure?
MD5 is not considered secure for new applications that require cryptographic security. Because of collision attacks, SHA-256 or stronger algorithms should be preferred.
Is SHA-1 secure?
SHA-1 has also been weakened against collision attacks and is not recommended for new security systems. Unless compatibility is required, SHA-256 or SHA-512 should be used.
What is the difference between SHA-256 and SHA-512?
SHA-256 produces a 256-bit digest, while SHA-512 produces a 512-bit digest. SHA-512 provides longer output, but both algorithms are widely used in modern applications.
Can the original text be recovered from a hash value?
Hash functions are one-way and are not designed to return directly from a hash value to the original text. However, weak or predictable inputs can be found with dictionary and brute-force attacks.
Can SHA-256 be used to store passwords?
Storing passwords with SHA-256 alone is not recommended. For password storage, slow key derivation algorithms such as Argon2, scrypt, bcrypt or PBKDF2 should be used together with a salt.
Is my hash data sent to the server?
No. Hash creation in this tool is performed directly in your browser. The text you enter is not sent to the server.
Is the Hash Generator free?
Yes. You can use the Tekno Danışman Hash Generator for free and without registration.
